I'll start in the New Year
Friday, April 6th 2020
The closer it gets to Christmas, the more often we hear the phrase “I’ll start in the New Year”. This is in regards to many things, not just fitness. In some cases I can understand this, and of course we relate. But when it comes to your health and well-being – why wait?
We’ve heard people say "I’m just going to eat and drink far too much over the holidays anyway, so what’s the point in starting now". Well that’s exactly the point. Your health should be a huge priority. Not just for yourself, but for your family too. Set a good example. It’s fine to eat and drink more than you should over Xmas. We do it ourselves every year, and we won’t deny that. But what can we do to counter this? Maybe train a little harder. We can cut out some snacks we would otherwise usually have. We can control portion sizes more. There are many small steps to ensure we don’t let this "holiday period" stretch out over the New Year and beyond.
People often justify waiting until January to start their fitness journey with the phrase "New Year New Me". We don't believe anybody should think so little of themselves to need a "New Me", so we prefer the term "Better me". Everybody can better themselves in some way, no matter who they are. And small changes are the sustainable way to do this. Whether this be increased exercise, a change to nutrition, or a mind-set alteration.
But why wait until the New Year? Why not start making the small steps to that "better me" today? It’s a long journey, and delaying the start is just delaying the goal. Always remember the phrase - A year from now you will wish you had started today.
Ultimately, all you can ask is to be a little bit better than you were yesterday. Small progress is still progress. So let’s scrap the phrase "New Year New Me". I have an alternative I’d like to offer:
New Day, Better Me - Every day is a chance to be better you than the day before.
